Tis the season for eggnog, gifts, nativities, Santa, reindeer, carolers, and candlelight services.  It is also the season for holiday parties and lighting up your neighborhood in the most festive way possible.

And the best way is to light up the sky is with lights on your house.

At Mission Painting and Home Improvements, we want to share a few do’s and don’ts with your inner Clark Griswold and safely provide lighting for you and all those around.

DON’T neglect electrical maintenance. Before lighting your house, hire a professional electrician to make sure your home is ready for the increased energy draw from your home. In addition, check the bulbs from last year’s lights – if you reuse, replace any that show signs of damage.

DO plug into GFCI outlets. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets keep power surges and short circuits from damaging your exterior lights.

DON’T work alone on a ladder. Always have someone hold the base of the ladder while you work. And carry all your supplies in a tool belt so that you can keep at least one hand on the ladder while working.

DO use the right lights for the situation. Not all lights are outside lights and those that aren’t can’t hold up against the Kansas City winters.

DON’T forget that if you’re looking to save time and money this year, the professionals at Mission Painting and Home Improvements are here to help you with all your holiday lighting needs.
